Book Review: The Englishman’s Suit
The Englishman’s Suit
by Hardy Amies
The topic at hand being the history of what we recognise to be a suit, Amies takes the reader on a journey from the 1600s to the end of the 20th century. It’s an enjoyable jaunt, though not something to be picked up by the casual browser. The tone is one of stern headmaster dictating rules and regulations rather than that of enthusiast; this would definitely be a turn-off for some.
Unfortunately, although published in 1994, it has dated hugely over the intervening years. Suggestions as to why this might be so would be drawn from the author’s possible hangover from the horrific ’80s fashion developments, even in the suiting world, as well as his forecasting further suit evolution rather than the current Mad Men inspired flashback to past, classic looks.
When all is said and done, his “ABC…” is a much better purchase.
